In our latest video we’ve shared a few ideas as to how your child can learn through playing with soil and mud. Here’s some more age-appropriate activities to do at home.
3-6 Months

Scoop some soil from your garden into a big plastic container. Put your baby’s feet and hands into the soil and let him feel the texture. Mix some water into the soil to make mud. Your baby will feel a different texture now. Talk to your baby and explain what he is feeling.

Print out the free printable at the bottom of this blog. “Paint” some mud onto your baby’s feet and make a print with his little feet on the paper.
7 – 12 Months

Let your baby scoop some soil from your garden into a big plastic container. Let him play with the soil. Give your baby a watering can or plastic cup with water to pour it into the soil. Let your baby stir the mixture using a spoon. Mix some water into the soil to make mud. Your baby will feel a different texture now. Talk to your baby and explain what he is feeling.

Hide a few toys in the mud – ask your baby to look for it.

Give your baby a container with clean water and soap as well as a sponge or old toothbrush. Help him to wash his toys in the clean water. Talk to him about the difference between CLEAN and DIRTY.
- Paste a page from a newspaper onto an outside wall. Give your baby a toothbrush or paintbrush and let them paint with the mud.
